Why insurance is different
Pet transportation combines two risk categories: animal care and vehicle transportation. That is why a normal dog walking or pet sitting insurance mindset is not enough by itself.
You are responsible for the animal, the vehicle trip, pickup and drop-off, client communication, and sometimes appointment handling. Coverage needs to match the actual work.
Animal liability coverage
Animal-related liability helps protect you if a pet in your care injures someone, damages property, escapes, or is involved in an incident while under your professional responsibility.
Look for pet business insurance designed for pet care operators, and verify that transportation is not excluded. Policy language matters. Do not assume because it covers pet sitting that it also covers transport.
Commercial auto coverage
If you are being paid to transport pets, your personal auto policy may not cover the activity. Commercial auto coverage or a proper business-use endorsement is critical.
This is the coverage layer many beginners miss. They think animal liability covers everything. It does not replace auto coverage for a vehicle accident.
Care custody and control
Care, custody and control coverage addresses the animal itself while in your professional care. If a pet is injured during a job, this is the type of coverage you want to understand clearly.
Ask direct questions when getting quotes: Does this policy cover pets during transport? Does it cover loading and unloading? Does it cover waiting at a veterinary appointment?
What not to assume
Do not assume marketplace coverage applies to your independent business. Do not assume personal auto covers paid work. Do not assume a generic business policy understands animal transport.
Before your first paid ride, get written confirmation from your insurance provider about what is covered and what is excluded.
