Requirements depend on the model

Pet transportation business requirements change based on what you offer. Local vet appointment transport is different from airport cargo support, long-distance relocation, or interstate transport.

Before asking what is required, define the service model clearly.

Business and local setup

Most operators should review business registration, local licensing, tax setup, service area, payment processing, and whether local rules apply to transport, animal care, or courier-like activity.

Simple does not mean informal. A trust-based service should still feel like a real business.

Insurance and vehicle use

Insurance is one of the most important requirements to verify. Ask about commercial auto, business use, general liability, and animal care/custody/control coverage.

Do not assume a personal auto policy covers paid pet transport.

Forms and client authorization

You need an intake form, client agreement or waiver, emergency contact, pickup and destination details, pet behavior notes, medical notes, and permission to transport.

These documents make the ride safer and make the service feel more professional.

When compliance gets more complex

Airport cargo, interstate transport, breeder transport, adoption transport, and long-distance routes can introduce additional state, USDA/APHiS, health certificate, and animal welfare questions.

Use official sources and professional advice before offering those services.
